t1.dnsbl.net.au

This list comprises the aggregate of all the sub lists, which are of type 1, which is everything.

NOTE: 28 August 2003.

As of today, the spews database is no longer included in the t1.dnsbl.net.au aggregate zone. After suggestions from subscribers, the requirements for data included into the t1 aggregate zone have changed.

Data which will be included in the t1 aggregate zone must:

  • A. be sourced from an often updated, well maintained and structured source,
  • B. maintained by an organisation who is clearly defined and contactable,
  • C. where that organisation is highly regarded in the industry,
  • D. system has a functional lookup service, and operational removal process,
  • E. and is trying to only contain data which prevents invalid email propagating.

spews fails on a number of those key requirements, so has been removed. An audit will be undertaken of other sources, currently inluded in t1, to ensure they comply.

Please try to use the t1 zone, in preference to a mix of the various zones here. This will also help us keep the load down on our bandwidth, databases, and servers.

Please see the spews spews page for more spews details.

The 'everything in 1' zone used to also be available as the plain dnsbl.net.au. But since holding 2 copies of the complete zone file in memory under 2 different zone names tends to consume twice as much memory, we had to drop the master bl zone to be only for admin things, and make the t1 zone be the only copy of the complete list.

People who used to poll dnsbl.net.au will need to adjust their configs, replacing 'dnsbl.net.au' with 't1.dnsbl.net.au', unless of course, they are using their particular zones of interest directly.

    Type 1 DNSbl
Definition- "Email software decision making based upon the identity of the most recent, non-local mail server, that attempts to deliver email."
Examples - The most typical of this type, is the MAPS service (now subscription only) and the broad range of other DNS block lists. Currently easily configured into most, if not all, major email server software packages.
Analogy - Look through the keyhole on your door, and refuse to open you door to accept packages delivered to your home, but only from courier companies, or door knockers, where you can see who they are, and you've had problems with them before.
Advantages - Very low overheads, very fast decision making
Disadvantages - Colateral damage to the innocent people who accidentally chose to use a courier on your 'reject' list.
Coverage - Widely used methodology, due to it's long term inclusion into the default setup's of many software packages.
Success - Blocks lots of junk and unwanted emails.
