subscription services
While dnsbl.net.au is offering this service on a not-for-profit basis.
The subscription fees are strictly a cost recovery measure that helps
support the current and future 24x7 operational requirements of this service.
Other costs that dnsbl.net.au must cover include 24x7 service monitoring;
server maintenance and connectivity; help-desk support; second-level 24x7
on-call engineering; and ongoing maintenance of the service database server software
that powers the dnsbl.net.au service.
Ongoing legal advice and services also need to be covered.
Metcalfe's Law
Sun - The Net Effect
The inventor of Ethernet, Metcalfe was among the first to herald
the value and exponential power of connecting more and more
machines to the network. Metcalfe's Law indicated that,
however many devices you connect, the value of the resulting
network could be expressed as the number of devices -- squared.
Context Magazine
Conventional wisdom is that a remarkably powerful effect known
as Metcalfe's Law is driving the growth of the Internet.
The law says that the value of a network grows in proportion
to the square of the number of users, which means that,
once a network achieves a certain size, it becomes almost
irresistibly attractive.
or just google it
Considering Metcalfe's Law (thanks Justin!) it seems that for
a project like dnsbl.net.au to be successful, it will need
a large user base.
The human resources time consumed to carry out the
software development, testing, configuration, database
management and client management, as well as the direct
costs associated with bandwidth provisioning,
server hardware and redundancy planning, are significant.
So all that needs to be paid for somehow.
Unlike other companies who I have assisted with those
tasks over the years, in various ways, I won't start the
service out as a 'free service' to only convert it to a
'paid service', when it's all operational with a significant client
base.
It will be a paid service from the start, and it will
remain a paid service.
The subscription table below is targeted at getting as many
people as possible participating, hopefully, at a reasonable
price for their particular organisation and circumstances.
Individuals, companies or organisations who contribute to the
ongoing maintenance and upkeep of dnsbl.net.au, will be
granted either partnership or recognition licenses.
Contributions may include :
- Development of interface software for servers or clients.
- Documentation, of the web site, software, FAQ's, installation.
- Providing spamtrap spam email to feed into automated analysis process.
- Secondarying DNS zone files
Direct DNS Query Method - TABLE A (Monthly) Pricing
$3.00 per 10,000 queries (or part thereof),
when charged monthly in arrears directly to a Credit Card |
$2.00 per 10,000 queries (or part thereof),
when charged monthly in advance directly to a Credit Card |
| Australian clients, are subject to GST, so add 10% |
query defined as any single logfile event in rbldnsd logfile
ie all separate TXT, A, AAAA or ANY name server request types.
Further, querying t1.dnsbl.net.au only, is way cheaper,
than querying all 12 sub zones separately.
|
eg averaging 20,000 queries per day is 600,000 per month
and paying monthly in arrears
Non Australian client pays 600,000 * $3.00 / 10,000 = $180.00
Australian client pays additional 10% GST = $198.00
|
eg 1,000,000 queries per month, paid in advance
Non Australian client pays 1,000,000 * $2.00 / 10,000 = $200.00
Australian client pays additional 10% GST = $220.00
