Q What are the current DNSbl's status?
A See status for a summary of which blocklists are currently available and their status.
Q Which blocklist should I use?
A For broad coverage, use the Type lists, t1, t2 or t3.dnsbl.net.au.
For a more specific and targeted approach, use the specific blocklists. ors, oss, ops, ows.dnsbl.net.au.
Use the type 1 list, if you want to stop likely spam/abuse email from the last known delivery server.
Use the type 2 list, if you have special software which can scan all the headers for hosts, which are to be checked against the specific or general type 2 list.
Use the type 3 list, if you are running specific software which will scan both the header and body of an email for key spam indicators, which need to be checked against a type 3 list.

Q I'm using Sendmail version 8.11 or later. What do I need to do exactly?
A First you need to choose which blocklist you want to use. We also use sendmail delay_checks feature, to provide very useful additional logging information. (There are only 2 full lines below, both starting with the word FEATURE, second line is very long, and displayed here as 3 lines for clarity only.) Then edit your sendmail.mc file, and add a line such as:
FEATURE(`delay_checks', `friend')

FEATURE(`dnsbl', `t1.dnsbl.net.au', `"571 ACCESS DENIED to <"$&f">
thru "$&{client_name}" by /t1/ ; In AU phone 1902 291 089 or see
http://dnsbl.net.au/lookup/?"$&{client_addr}')dnl
Then rebuild your sendmail.cf and restart sendmail.
Q I don't have the dnsbl.m4 script mentioned above. Where do I find it?
A We use a combination dnsbl script, which allows for both temporary and permanent failures, and also RHS hostname, or standard IPV4 syntax queries. sendmail/dnsbl.m4 Please be very careful when copying this file into your sendmail feature or hack M4 directories, as it contains invisible, but very important, TAB characters.
Q I'm using postfix. What do I need to do exactly?
A Craig Small has volunteered to look after the
postfix instructions web page. Thanks Craig!
